Peguero settling in for Franklin Pierce

With two future teammates batting .340 or better, it's easy to get lost in the shadows. But Anthony Peguero is putting together a solid season for the Franklin Pierce baseball team this season, his first since transferring from Wallace Community College.

Peguero, the starting third baseman, is batting .312 with one home run and nine RBI heading into Sundays doubleheader against American International. He has also swiped nine bases on the season.

Chase continues to hit for ND

The University of Notre Dame’s bio for Tommy Chase describes him as a “quintessential program type kid.” Typically, when players are described in this manner it means they work diligently and remain silent despite not receiving much playing time. Up to this point, Chase fit the definition.

However, Chase is making it tough on the Irish coaching staff to do anything but play him.

On Wednesday night against the University of Texas – San Antonio, Chase started off the scoring in the second inning with a deep triple to centerfield knocking in a run and giving Notre Dame a 1-0 lead.

In the third inning, Chase struck again with an RBI single and scored his second run of the game, adding to the Notre Dame lead. He ended the night 2 for 3 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored before being pinch hit for late in the game. Chase is batting .300 on the season with 4 RBI and has started nine of the team's thirteen games.

Greg Wilson made the most of his start in UMass-Lowell’s 10-5 loss to Dowling on Saturday. Wilson had two hits and 2 RBI’s and scored a run.  Wilson, a sophomore from Medford, Mass, will be fighting for a starting spot in the Mavericks outfield this summer.

Marentette Keeps Going Strong

Marentette (Photo: Oakland U.)
Freshman Spencer Marentette (Oakland University) continued his strong season for the Grizzlies with a 2 for 3 performance in Friday night's 9-2 win over Ohio. Marentette had two RBI's and scored a run in the game. The Kingville, Ontario native has been solid in the field, as well, with only one error in 25 chances. He has appeared in seven of Oakland's nine games, five as a starter.

Another freshman, Lucas Olen, pitched a scoreless ninth inning in Southern New Hampshire University's 2-1 loss on Friday night. Olen had two strikeouts and holds a 0.00 ERA on the season. The loss was the first for SNHU (13-1). Olen better be keeping notes on teammate Jon Minucci, who plays for the Nashua Silver Knights during the summer. Minucci is on fire, batting .438 with two home runs and 20 RBI's in 12 games entering last night's doubleheader.

We will have our first look at returning Mavericks pitcher Dennis Torres who is scheduled to throw for UMass-Amherst against nationally-ranked UCF in Orlando, Florida on Saturday. Torres had a 3.15 ERA was tied for fifth in the FCBL with 39 strikeouts last season.

Phillip Erwin had a two-RBI double to start the scoring for NYACK in an 8-2 win over College of Saint Rose on Friday. Cole Tobin and old friend Wayne Richardson each pitched a perfect inning to close out the game for the Warriors.

After being sidelined all last season recovering from Tommy John surgery, Cole Tobin (NYACK) made a successful return to the mound in Nyack's 8-1 loss to Queens on Monday. Tobin allowed one run and three hits in four innings. He struck out three batters and did not allow a walk.
